“Ashes are used on this day as a sign of mortality and repentance following the long history of both Jewish and Christian worship. The imposition of ashes can be a powerful nonverbal and experiential way of participating in the call to repentance and reconciliation. We wear the sign of the ashes on our forehead as we go about the day and the season of Lent, reminding us to repent and believe in the Gospel.”
