Here is a heart warming story about a great adventure featuring two old men and one almost ancient man who became good friends today. Oh yes, this story ends with a moral that fits perfectly with the upcoming holiday season.
But this story starts like so many stories do with a heart breaking discovery that made everyone very disappointed and sad at a time of year that everyone should be thankful and joyful for the many blessings we all have.
The heart breaking discovery was that almost half of our remaining sweet potatoes had become moldy and had to be discarded on the compost pile instead of being given as planned to people who are hungry. Now one thing that could possibly be a silver lining in all that is that the deer are hungry too so the moldy sweet potatoes likely won’t become compost because the hungry deer will feast on them before they can become compost. OK, ok, so that isn’t much of a consolation so I’ll get back to the story.
Well the two old men decided to take a nice drive in the country today thinking it might just cheer them up a bit. And it did help some because the countryside is starting to show off its fall colors and this made the two old men smile. But that is not the moral of the story. What happens next is kind of a little miracle that happened and that makes the moral of the story come to life.
The two old men were driving down a pretty county road when they came upon a nice little white house with blue shutters on the windows and an old barn behind the house that the old men noticed was packed full with boxes of sweet potatoes. Well, the old men looked at each other and they both had the same idea at exactly the same time. So they stopped the truck, backed up to the driveway of the nice little house with the barn and turned in to get a closer look. When they got up to the barn an almost ancient man stepped out of the house and came over asking the old men, “what can I do for you fellas today?” (That’s the miracle part)
The old men told the almost ancient man the sad story of half of their sweet potatoes being moldy and had to be thrown on the compost pile instead of being given to people who are hungry. With that the almost ancient man smiled and looked at the two old men with his sparkling eyes and said, “well fellas this just might be your lucky day because me and the misses were just talking about how worried we were because we have way to many sweet potatoes this year. Why don’t you turn that truck around and back it up to the barn over there by that pile of sweet potato boxes and take all you need to feed those hungry people.”
And so the old men did just that. They filled the back of the truck with 1,060 pounds of the prettiest sweet potatoes you have ever seen. And when they were finished the almost ancient man just thanked them for stopping by today. Then he turned and went back into the little white house. The old men guessed that he couldn’t wait another minute to tell the misses what just happened today.
And this my friends is the moral of the story.
Don’t despair when things go wrong because so many times a little miracle comes along in the form of an idea to take a drive in the country to provide for not only what we need but also for what others who become good friends need to share.
The End
Happy Holidays
